Getting to school on time, being prepared for the day, the ability to self-correct and monitor when reading or writing, knowing time constraints to get tasks finished on time, self-evaluating own learning to identify what you have achieved and what improvements can be made – these are just some of the aspects of the Key Competency Managing Self.
Managing Self is identified as one of the five key competencies in the New Zealand Curriculum. These competencies have been recognised as ones that people use to live, work and contribute as active members of their community.

This term we have been discussing, talking about and unpacking this competency as a school. Children have been involved with sharing their ideas of what Managing Self means for them. They are becoming increasingly aware of what skills are required to self manage.

As a staff, we further unpacked what we thought this competency meant and what can be seen and developed in our classes that promote and support this competency. Click on the picture to view a large image of our ideas.

We welcome your comments and ideas on Managing Self and you may have some anecdotes of how your children have been managing themselves to become independent and successful life long learners.
